Why Salt?

Why salt, of all things, were we called?
Why not sugar, who is sweet upon the small
Or honey who is much more golden and warm,
The kind that leaves no sting no harm?

Salt can burn where wounds are raw,
and highlights every flaw.
But sugar fades when sweetness ends,
and honey loses what it once lends

For salt was never meant to please,
Or make the bitter moments sweet.
It was made to preserve what lives,
To keep what matters complete

So the sweetest things
were never what the world had sought;
For sugar sweetens what will fade
While salt preserves what must be fought

And that’s the reason why
The answer lies where sweetness dies
Of all the things that we could be
We are called salt both you and me
