For years, I just lay there in the desert, the middle of nowhere, in silence.
I was barely noticed. Not a soul was in sight and I just simply existed there. Until He came. Everything in the desert including me knew what silence was, we experienced it every day but His
silence was somehow different.
He didn’t speak at all. He just sat beside me, hungry just as every human would be, yet He was more than that. In His tired eyes, I saw resolve greater than strength and even as He grew weaker by the days that passed, I never once heard Him complain but only prayers muttered from His lips….
40 days had passed.
Then he came, the ‘the tempter’, he looked…. just like a normal man except that his fake smile looked too perfect…. almost as if he had practiced it for decades. His presence was cold and taunting just like the words of his mouth,
“If You are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.”
I didn’t even have a heart but it was thumping loudly. Was this finally my chance to be something more than a stone? I hoped that He would just mutter the words, that I would be chosen, that I would finally have a true purpose. But what He said, surprised me.
He said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word of God.’ ”
That’s when I realized He did not need to turn me into bread. He was the bread… not just any bread but
the bread of Life.
And as for me, I stayed the same, as a stone.
But I had experienced something much greater, a Saviour who saw me but still said no, not because I was worthless but because His mission wasn’t to satisfy hunger. His mission was to fulfill God’s purpose for Him through Obedience.
And in doing so, He chose me.
